Abstract

This article aimed to study multiculturalism through the cultural differences and identity in Chinese American families portrayed by the characters in the novel Everything I Never Told You. This research was a cultural study research that used the qualitative method and library research method and the close reading and narrative description approach to understanding the cultural differences and identity in Chinese families following Stuart Hall’s cultural studies theory. In conclusion, the identity crisis in people with different cultures and identities in a multicultural environment was due to various causes, such as minority racial discrimination, their difficult positioning within society, failed attempts to adapt to society, and the influence of their parent’s worldview in bringing them up. Fulfilling others’ dreams was not an easy job which may cause further damage in the process of identity-searching for people in the multicultural environment facing discrimination.
